What Are These Overlapping Emotions? (重なる気持ちって、なに?, Kasanaru kimochi tte, nani?) is the ninth episode of SSSS.DYNAZENON.
Monster of the week: Gibzorg (ギブゾーグ, Gibuzōgu)
Synopsis[]
Chise's kaiju seed has grown into a full-blown kaiju which she names Goldburn. Yomogi and Yume meet Kano's boyfriend Futaba. After their conversation Yuma becomes disconsolate, but a kaiju appears and Yomogi runs off. Distraught and alone, disaster befalls her but she is saved by Goldburn. They all unite as Goldburn, Gridknight, and of course Dynazenon combine to defeat the kaiju.
Summary[]
The episode begins with Chise jumping awake from a nightmare where despite everything that happened so far, she is still alone. To her shock, random objects in her room has somehow grew and shrunk in size. The culprit is none other than the strange pebble she discovered that has turned into a mechanical wyvern-like kaiju. Unlike ones they encounter however, this kaiju is greatly robotic and obeys her command, from basic instructions people give to their pet (sit, lay down, and paw shake) to returning her belongings back to its original size. Curious to see it listening to her unlike the last one, she named it Goldburn.
At the school, Yomogi's friends inform Yomogi about the upcoming 38th Uzukigaoka Fireworks Festival despite their lack of interest to join it for their own reasons. When the news about it reaches Yume, she expresses her interest to go there with Yomogi decides to tag along and informs the rest of the group about it, though they turned out has no means to contact Knight and Nidaime about it.
Back to Chise, she asks Koyomi about the prospect of peaceful kaijus that can understand people, but is interrupted by both Yomogi's call on her cousin's phone and Goldburn struggling in her suitcase, prompting Chise to hastily leave and ask Gauma instead. Koyomi eventually realizes Chise's departure when he is about to relay Yomogi's invitation to the upcoming festival. Meeting Gauma, Chise awkwardly asks him the same thing. Believing she is still bothered by the previous kaiju issue, the uncertain Gauma states that they should combat kaijus that pose legitimate threat. Unable to get a satisfying solution from either (she asks the two without revealing Goldburn), Chise eventually decides to keep it a secret from the others. But it is easier to be said than done, as Goldburn suddenly grows in size, tearing the suitcase it trapped within in the process. Sensing its mistress being in low spirits, the still-growing unusual kaiju places Chise onto its back before taking off to the sky with her riding it to cheer her up. This unexpected turn of events brightens Chise's mood somewhat until she forlornly notices Ayame Middle School, the school she used to attend. To her shock, her mood change upon the sight of such school goes not unnoticed by Goldburn who sweeps in to attack it, prompting its mistress to stop it before it could do more harm. Relieved from such close call, Chise apologizes to Goldburn for provoking it.
Kaiju Eugenicists finds their next kaiju; a green semi-humanoid brute with claws for arms and retractable back spike that produces waves that can melt things. Using Instance Domination, Juuga assumes control over the beast.
Later that afternoon, Futaba Senda eventually appears in Yomogi's class, prompting Yomogi to call Yume. The two eventually inquired him about his history with Kano and what he knows regarding her alleged suicide. The conversation soon turns sour as despite his own doubts, Futaba is shown to be rather aloof about both Kano's death and the fact that he's talking to her late friend's little sister before departs and hints that he ditched her for another girl through a silver ring on his hand, leaving Yume devastated. Before Yomogi could comfort her, however, Gauma contacts him about another kaiju attack, prompting him to leave without her as she shuts herself in once again despite stating that she will catch up.
The news of another kaiju attack reaches Chise who uncertain of what to do with Goldburn. Overhearing what Chise heard from Gauma through her phone, Goldburn takes off to the sky seemingly to check the situation.
Meanwhile, Gauma and Koyomi fights Juuga's kaiju with Dynadiver and Dynastriker, but is overwhelmed by the kaiju's special abilities that resulted the ground beneath them to ripple like waves. Onija warns the excited Juuga not to work up too much on it as Shizumu senses that Gridknight has entered the scene. As the fight goes to their favor with Gridknight joins the battle, Yomogi arrives with his Dynasoldier during which they realized Yume is not arrived yet. Upon hearing their circumstances, the worried Gauma blasts Dynastriker with a salvo of low-rez bolts of his Dynadiver before telling Yomogi to get back to their missing friend at once, fearing the worst and knowing Yomogi is the only one that can help her. With that, Yomogi sets off for his friend at once.
As Gauma feared, Yume has become despondent and is sitting at the edge of the flood gate where Kano died. Chise stumbles upon Yume while losing Goldburn and attempts to talk to her friend about why she is so distressed. Having enough of seeing Yume so closed-off to the point of ignoring her attempts to reach her, the equally distressed Chise calls her out for it all while revealing she wished to fight as part of their team so as not to be left out. That is when Goldburn returns to join its mistress to snap Yume out of her depression, surprising her. Though Goldburn appears at the wrong time because it soon tackled aside by Yomogi with his Dynasoldier before confronting it in order to protect Yume, Chise makes it clear that both her fights all this time truly worth more than she realized and Yomogi remains on her side no matter what prove that she has yet to lose everything from the moment Kano passed away, indirectly drawing a contrast between her and Yomogi's situation with Kano and Futaba's own in the past. The next turn of event further solidifies Chise's point; when Yume unexpectedly fell off the floodgate due to attempting to reclaim Kano's twin ankhs that slipped from her grasp, Yomogi and Goldburn rushed to save her with the latter managed to catch her when the former failed. This in turn, convinced Yomogi that Goldburn is truly their ally.
Soon after, Yomogi, Yume, and Chise arrive to Gridknight, Gauma, and Koyomi's rescue just as Juuga's kaiju creates a quicksand to sink them all. While Yomogi and Yume use Dynasoldier Wing Combine to pull Gauma and his Dynadiver to the safety, Chise does the same with Goldburn whose presence shocked Koyomi and Kaiju Eugenicists as expected. Checking on the unusual kaiju with his Instance Domination, Shizumu is surprised to see Goldburn rejecting him. Chise tells Gauma and Koyomi that Goldburn can hear her heart and therefore on their side. Yomogi and Yume back up the claim by revealing the unusual kaiju has saved the latter from falling recently. Skeptical at first even with Koyomi siding with his cousin as well, Gauma, apparently understanding why Chise seemingly brought up the topic about the then-miniature kaiju they destroyed on the other day in their conversation earlier, decides to let Goldburn fight on their side.

A New Union

Kaiser Gridknight
Forming Dynazenon, Gauma, Koyomi, Yomogi, and Yume pull Gridknight out of the quick sand (much to Gridknight's chagrin as he dislikes receiving assistance) as Goldburn distracts Juuga's kaiju. As if having an actual kaiju fighting on their side is both awesome and touching enough, the same unusual kaiju suddenly transforms into a massive, near-indestructible shield to protect both Dynazenon and Gridknight from the destructive dark laser fired by Juuga's kaiju, further impressing Chise. With that, Gridknight, Goldburn, and Dynazenon join forces by unveiling their greatest combination yet; Super Dragon King Kaiser Gridknight!
Undaunted, Juuga rallies his kaiju to go all out, but his kaiju soon overwhelmed in both in close-quarter and ranged. Not even the opponent kaiju's laser blast can reach Kaiser Gridknight because he is too fast. The fight soon culminated to Kaiser Gridknight releasing Kaiser Knight Double Storm to blast off the enemy's arm off and knock it to the sky at the same time before finishing it off with Rex Grid Fire, blowing it into pieces. Kaiju Eugenicists' recent defeat tasted bitter for Juuga as despite Onija and Mujina's reassurance, they are running out of kaijus as they speak due to their numbers in the world is finite, a concern that Shizumu agrees.
After the battle ends, Gauma acknowledges that they all have to fight together since they cannot win without everyone. Thus, he formally accepts Chise and Goldburn into their rank in the fight against their common adversary. The group realizes the festival already started as soon as they concluded the fight, prompting them to make haste for it and Gauma drags Nidaime and Knight along. Unfortunately, the festival has since concluded presumably because of its schedules got affected by their enemy's latest attack. Despite this, Yomogi suggests to improvise by holding a small festifal of their own, giving Nidaime an idea to bring Knight along as they buy some supplies for it. The excited Chise decides to do the same thing with the surprised Koyomi joins her while Yume returns home for a moment or two.
Though small, the group's festival that held by the river near Gauma's camp proves fun nonetheless. But Yume's absence worries Gauma that he implores Yomogi to check on her only for the latter enamored by his crush who finally shows up with a beautiful yukata on. We then see how the group enjoy their small festival; Chise taking pictures of Goldburn soaring on the sky as the delighted Koyomi look on, Nidaime, Knight, Yomogi, and Yume enjoying their fireworks at the earnest, and Gauma looks on everyone with smile. The episode concludes with its last few frame showing Yomogi and Yume smiling - the revelation of how Kano died did awful, but their day is not that bad after all...
Characters[]
Voice Drama[]
- 9.9: A Good Senior (イイ先輩, Ī Senpai)[1][2]
- Once again, Inamoto teases Yomogi about his supposed love life while talking about her own life experiences, saying how the newer generation of youths have turned out a bit different.
Trivia[]
- This episode contains similar allusions to "Confrontation" of SSSS.GRIDMAN in which Kaiser Gridknight relates to Full Powered Gridman through the following controversies:
- The King of Braves Gaogaigar: The slow camera-up/mecha part shots transition after its combination debut.
- The Brave Express Might Gaine: Whereas Gridman's Full Power Finish attack is controverted from Great Might Gaine's first signature move, Kaiser Gridknight's Rex Grid Fire, is presumably derived from the Perfect Cannon, the latter's second signature move.
- Both combinations requiring equal mass proportions in which Dynazenon was basked in Goldburn's mass manipulation beam just as the Neon Genesis Junior High Students compress their mecha forms to avoid overloading the Junk.

- Other parallels to said previous installment are:
- "Decisive Battle" - The shot of Chise approaching Yume on top of a flood gate with the scene between Rikka Takarada and Akane Shinjo.
- "Defeat" - Gridknight dashes around Juuga's kaiju in a similar fashion to his manoeuvres in his first fight against Gridman
- "Awakening" - Dynazenon pulling out Gridknight from the quicksand generated by Juuga's kaiju mirrors to how GridKnight pulled Akane out of her kaiju form Zegga (which reflected how Gamera pulled out Ayane from Iris' core in Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys). Gridknight apparently notes this through his claim of dislike of receiving help.

Floodgates were built along the dike
- The flood gate which Yume keeps going to seems to be based on one in Tokyo which separates Ayase River from Arakawa River.
